VJ storyteller: Janine Jansen

In this Q&A-series, we put video journalists in the spotlight. They are a special breed and, in the spirit of The Concentra Award, we love to hear their fascinating stories.

In the last Concentra Award competition, Janine Jansen caught our eye with her 'rabbits'-story. We confronted her with a quick Q&A for our storyteller-series!

How much work experience do you have? And how long as a video journalist?
I've been working as a VJ for 3 years.

How many video journalists work at your station?
They're about 20 VJ's running around in the newsroom of BBC South West.

What is the biggest advantage of your work as a video journalist?
I can set up my own stories whenever I want without having to wait for a crew.

Do you encounter problems as a video journalist?
The biggest problem is often that the VJ equipment is not as good quality as the other cameramen have here.

Tell us about your camera, editing software, ...
I use a Sony Z1 camera and do the editing with Avid Express. The small Z1 is unobtrusive and an advantage for nervous interviewees.

Do you use a tripod? Why (not)?
I try to use tripod for interviews and for shots of still buildings etc. I don't use it for other stuff because it's much easier to be free and versatile.

Do you have an insider tip or trick for fellow video journalists?
Always look for a different shot - if you're standing comfortably, you won't get anything special. Bend down or get up high - anything to get a different angle.
